George J. Hayden, Inc., President George F. Hayden presented the 2018 Green Business of the Year Award to Dr. Maria Aumeck, DC, and the staff of Whole Life Center for Health during the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce’s 18th annual Business and Community Awards luncheon.
Whole Life Center for Health is a multidisciplinary center that offers a variety of services, including chiropractic services, supplemental nutritional testing, hypnotherapy and therapeutic massage.
Hayden said, “George J. Hayden, Inc., is proud to sponsor the Green Business of the Year Award for the sixth year in a row. The purpose of this award is to extend appreciation to a business or organization within Greater Hazleton that is adopting green initiatives within their workplace. The applications were scored on strength, creativity and employee and customer participation of their workplace “green” initiatives. Whole Life Center definitely embodies all of these criteria and I think they are a worthy recipient.”
In addition to the general co-mingled recycling bins they utilize for their office’s paper, plastic, metal and cardboard waste, Whole Life Center for Health utilizes only natural plant-based cleaners, dish liquids, hand soaps, hand sanitizer and laundry detergent. They reduce their copy paper usage by printing on both sides of the paper whenever possible and use the back of any single-sided pages as scratch paper before they are ultimately recycled or shredded.
They use energy efficient LED light bulbs throughout the office and have made it a practice to turn lights off in treatment rooms when they are not occupied. Their HVAC units run on programmable thermostats and their outdoor lighting systems and garden fountain are all set to timers or motion sensors. Their computer equipment, printers, fax machine, television, kitchen and laundry appliances all carry “energy star” designation.
All employees have their own personal cup or water bottle to use at work. Spring water in BPA-free bottles is only ever ordered for their water cooler and 100% recycled paper water cups are used for the dispenser.
In their five chiropractic treatment rooms, they have chosen to forego the traditional rolls of paper that are used to cover the face piece and instead worked with a local seamstress to design and create washable cloth face piece covers that can be reused.
Whole Life Center for Health is a drop-off location for the Dancing Hen Farms crop share program, which provides the opportunity for residents to access local, healthy and responsibly-farmed goods. One of the main vendors they use to provide their patients with whole-food and herbal nutritional supplements is called Standard Process, along with their sister company Medi-Herb. This company makes sustainability and environmental stewardship a major priority in their business plan.
Whole Life Center for Health doesn’t use any chemical fertilizers or pesticides in their landscaping and strives to plant with as many native species as possible. In July, they were named a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation’s Garden for Wildlife Program.
